El nombre original de esta ciudad fue Joy´ Chan, término que significa: Cielo rodeado en lengua Cho´l. Apartir del siglo XVI los vestigios de esta fueron denominados con el vocablo náhuatl: Comalcalco, que se traduce como lugar de las casa del comal, quizá porque los ladrillos de su peculiar arquitectura parecían comales. Comalcalco se ubicó la margen derecha del río Mazapa-Mezcalapa, cuyas aguas provenientes de la serranía de los cuchumatanes en Guatemala, desembocan en el Golfo de México. Los principales conjuntos de arquitectura monumental como Plaza Norte, Gran Acrópolis y Acrópolis Este, se situaron sobre una extensa loma natural formada por las crecientes del caudaloso río. Joy´ Chan fue la ciudad más importante de la región noroccidental del área Maya durante el lapso que abarcó los años 550 al 900 d.c. El sitio arqueológico fue descubierto por el explorador francés Désire Charnay en 1880. Entre 1892 y 1992 se realizarían en el sitio diferentes trabajos arqueológicos dirigidos por Pedro Romero, Frans Blom y Oliver La Farge, Gordon Ekholm, Edwin Littman, Román Piña Chan, George F. Andrews, Ponciano Salazar y Mario Pérez Campa. Desde 1993 a la fecha el INAH ha desarrollado un proyecto de investigación y mantenimiento a cargo de un equipo multidisciplinario dirigido por Ricardo Armijo. The original name of this city was Joy 'Chan, a term meaning: Heaven surrounded Cho'l language. Starting on the sixteenth century the remains of it were referred to the Nahuatl word: Comalco, which translates as the place of the house of the griddle, perhaps because of its distinctive brick architecture seemed griddles. Comalcalco was located on the right bank of the river-Mezcalapa Mazapa, the waters from the highlands of Guatemala Cuchumatan in, flow into the Gulf of Mexico. The main sets of monumental architecture Plaza North, Great Acropolis and Acropolis East, were placed on an extensive natural hill formed by the rising of the mighty river. Joy 'Chan was the largest city in the northwestern region of the Maya area during the period covering the years 550 to 900 AD The archaeological site was discovered by French explorer Désiré Charnay in 1880. Between 1892 and 1992 would be implemented in different archaeological site run by Pedro Romero, Frans Blom and Oliver La Farge, Gordon Ekholm, Edwin Littman, Roman Pina Chan, George F. Andrews, Mario Perez Ponciano Salazar and Campa. From 1993 to date, the INAH has developed a research project and maintenance by a multidisciplinary team led by Ricardo Armijo.
