The Berlin Cathedral, the largest church in Berlin, sees itself as a central place of the evangelical church in Germany. Beyond the boundaries of the church and city community, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from Germany and abroad every year. The building was built between 1895 and 1905. The site of this building was occupied by a baroque cathedral built by Johann Boumann culminated in 1747 and later remodeled in 1822 by the Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel in neoclassical style. This cathedral was demolished in 1894 by order of the emperor Guillermo II and was replaced by the present one, designed by Julius Raschdorff in neo-baroque style of ends of centuries XIX and beginnings of century XX. During World War II, the temple was seriously damaged by the bombings. Until 1975, when reconstruction work began, a temporary roof was placed to protect the interior. These works concluded in 1993, with a new design of the upper part simpler and smaller than the original. Its front faces the garden Lustgarten and the Berliner Stadtschloss (Berliner Stadtschloss). It is 114 m long, 73 wide and 116 high, being much larger than the buildings that had previously existed in that place. It was thought of as a large Protestant temple that counteracted the influence of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City.
