Dusit District is, home to The Royal Palace of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Chitralada Palace is the Bangkok residence of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. King Bhumibol was the first king in the Chakri dynasty to live in the Chitralada Palace, he is known as Rama IX and having reigned since 9 June 1946, he is the world's longest serving current head of state and the longest reigning monarch in Thai history. He was born at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States on 5 December 1927. Dusit Palace was established by King Rama V, the first Thai monarch to visit Europe. Near this palace is Vimanmek Mansion reportedly the worlds largest Teakwood residence and was the former home of King Rama V. Also near the Palace is Parliament house, the previous parliament meetings were held in the hall on the upper level of Anantasamakhom Throne Hall. As the government expanded, permission was requested from the king for a new building, which was erected on the land once belonging to the Police Department. Parliament Building: Apart from being used for sessions of Parliament, it also houses the office of the house speaker, government press release room, parliament museum and a library. Dusit Zoo is located at Khao Din Park in Bangkok's Dusit District next to the Parliament House and Dusit Palace, it is the oldest zoo of Thailand, built by King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V ) as his private garden adjacent to the royal palace. After the King's passing, the garden was left unattended for years. In 1938, the revolutionary government asked King Rama VIII's regency to give this park to Bangkok City Municipality to be open as a public zoo. The King himself kindly bestowed deer's and several other animals from the palace for public exhibition. The City of Bangkok operated the zoo until 1954. Since then it has been transferred to the state Zoological Park Organization, which also operates Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Chiang Mai Zoo, Songkhla Zoo, and Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo.
